What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE is the point where you have enough invested that, even if you never contribute another dollar, compound growth alone will carry you to your retirement number by your target retirement age. After reaching it you still need to cover today's expenses, but you no longer have to save for retirement — your existing investments coast the rest of the way.

How is the Coast FIRE number calculated?

Accepted Answer

First find your retirement target: annual retirement spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate (e.g. $60,000 / 4% = $1.5M). Then discount that target back to today using your expected return over the years until retirement: target / (1 + return)^years. If your current investments already exceed that number, you've hit Coast FIRE.
